FREE ENTRY for kids ages 4-16 to this competition who want to share their ideas that will make learning at school easier and more fun!

  • Design a toy, game or a method made from using recycled, repurposed or reused plastics that makes learning
    at school easier or more fun.
  • Two age groups: 4-9 years-old and 10-16 years-old
  • Competition closes on the 20th of November.
  • There are great prizes to be won!

RULES, REQUIREMENTS and TIPS for the COMPETITION
What you need to do?

Invent, make or design an item, toy, game or educational aid using recycled or repurposed plastics that can help you learn at school or make learning fun! It can be also a teaching method. You can also use other components or materials (like wood, metal, cardboard) but it must be mainly plastic. You could also turn it into a smart device by including sensors, batteries, an Arduino board or similar.

What problem could you solve? What item could you design that will help you learn?
What would you create to make learning fun and easy?
Be practical and creative … it’s your idea that we are interested in.
You are a young innovator, inventor and a maker so let your imagination flow!
Who can participate?      Applications are split into two age categories

4–9-year-old category:
Entrants in this category are required to:

  • Make an interactive toy or game or anything to help you at school from recycled, repurposed or reused plastics. You can include other materials with your creation, such as paper or cardboard.
  • On the entry form there will be spaces where you can write a short description and explanation of what you have made, what problem you are trying to solve and how your creation solves it. The Judges are mainly interested in your thinking and making skills and remember, you must use plastic in some way
  • Take a photo of your creation OR make a short presentation video (60-90 seconds). You can do both if it suits you. You need to show why it will make learning more fun or easy.
  • Do research on PLASTIC and PLASTIC PRODUCTS and choose 3 facts about plastic that you think can be used to teach everyone to use plastic responsibly. This step is mandatory, it cannot be left out and the Judges will take note of your chosen facts,

10 –16-year-old category:
Entrants in this category are required to:

  • Make an interactive toy / aid / game / method mainly using recycled, repurposed or reused plastics though you can include other components and materials like wood, carboard or batteries etc.
  • On the entry form there will be spaces where you can show your sketches, design, drawings and photos of your creation with places for a detailed explanation of the problem and your solution for it
  • Make a short presentation video of your entry, with pictures and designs, which describes your problem, the product and your solution. You need to show why it will make learning more fun or easy.
  • Do research on PLASTIC and PLASTIC PRODUCTS and choose 3 facts about plastic that you think can be used to teach everyone to use plastic responsibly. This step is mandatory, it cannot be left out and the Judges will take note of your chosen facts,

There are amazing prizes for each category including a vacuum forming machine, a 3D printer, ‘goodie bags’ of
useful stationery, cash prizes for you or your school and more!
The Top 3 winners in each age group will also receive one-on-one coaching from an expert member
of the Institute of Inventors and Innovators on how to turn their creations into reality.

Rules of the competition:

  • No group work. This is an individual project. You may get help, but the work must be your own Any help you get must be acknowledged.
  • ALL the requirements noted above for each category are mandatory. Entries that do not complete all steps will be disqualified.
  • There will be no need to prepare separate documents as everything can be uploaded together with the entry form.
  • Should you be one of the winners, you will be contacted.
  • The Mentorship/Coaching prize is provided free of charge and in person, but if the winner resides in a different location, it may need to be done online.
  • You may be asked to have your photo taken and your project may be shared.
  • Winners will be invited to represent South Africa at the next GIFT – Global Innovation Field Trip in January 2023.
